Only a (Small) Matter of Pride

There were very few circumstances capable of leaving Maeve speechless.

Waking up less than four inches tall—and discovering that her clothing had not accompanied her transformation—came dangerously close.

She emerged from beneath the collapsed folds of her gothic clothes and grabbed a large but somewhat manageable piece of black fabric. It was heavy, but it preserved the minimum amount of dignity necessary to face the situation.

Then the floor trembled.

Two enormous, brightly colored shoes stopped in front of her.

Maeve stared at them.

She had always been the short one.

At five feet tall, she had spent years listening to Stephanie make the occasional joke about their height difference. She had learned to tolerate it.

This was considerably worse.

Maeve slowly followed the colorful socks upward until her neck refused to bend any farther.

Stephanie’s enormous face appeared above her, framed by her blonde hair.

“Oh. My. God. You’re tiny.”

“I noticed, thanks. Your powers of observation remain unparalleled.”

Stephanie crouched down, staring at her with wide eyes.

“Aww…”

“Do not.”

Stephanie immediately bit back a laugh.

“Sorry.”

She was not sorry.

A hand descended beside Maeve, palm open.

Maeve looked at it.

Then she looked down at the scrap of black fabric she was wearing.

She hesitated.

The piece of fabric was already awkwardly large. Getting into Stephanie’s hand while keeping it would be nearly impossible.

With an irritated sigh, Maeve let the fabric fall to the floor.

There went the last shred of her dignity.

She climbed carefully into Stephanie’s open palm.

A moment later, Stephanie held her near eye level, her eyes sparkling with barely contained amusement.

“I know you’ve always been short, but…” Stephanie’s smile widened. “I bet it’s gonna be reeeally hard for you to look down on people now!”

A faint trace of color appeared on Maeve’s cheeks.

“Enjoy this while it lasts,” she replied. “I am already considering several appropriately scaled forms of revenge.”

Stephanie giggled.

“Aww. Tiny threats!”

Maeve narrowed her eyes.

“Your continued survival depends upon you never calling them that again.”

Stephanie laughed.

“Yep. Definitely still Maeve. Anyways... If you're nice, I just might give you a Kleenex to wrap around yourself. You'd like to be less exposed, wouldn't you?"

"You know how some of your vegan friends say "I'd rather go naked than wear fur? Well, I'd rather go naked than wear white."

After another giggle from Steph, the tiny Maeve sighed.

At least some things had survived the transformation.
