College Drop-Out

"I don't know what you're so worried about," Maria said casually as she lay on her side watching her friend. Kathryn sat on the edge of the bed, head bowed as she contemplated her future.

"So you failed your final exam? Why does it matter?"

"It matters because with a failing grade, I won't graduate!" Kathryn snapped. "All my efforts will be for nothing! Mom and Dad warned that if I failed, they'd bring me home and then I'd never realize my dream of becoming a college graduate!"

Immediately regretting her anger, Kathryn bowed her head and whispered. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't be getting so upset. Least of all at you. You've been an inspiration to me these last four years."

"Only an inspiration?" Maria gave her friend a sly smile as she watched Kathryn's head begin to drop down a few inches. "And here I thought our love-making meant something more."

Not yet realizing what was to come, Kathryn stammered. "N-no, I-I didn't mean it that way! It does... I mean y-you do!"

By now, Kathryn could feel the bed sheets moving beneath her bare skin as her feet rose off the floor. Lifting her hands in front of her, Kathryn suddenly noticed that the room was looking different... bigger. Behind her, Maria was shrinking too (although she was well aware of what was happening and was relishing in it)!

"Wait, what's happening to me? Maria, something weird is..."

Feeling a tingling run up her back, Kathryn turned to gasp in astonishment as four beautiful, gossamer-like wings sprouted from her back, growing so fast that in the time it took her to blink, they'd doubled in size!

"I-I'm...shrinking!"

Looking over at Maria, she gasped again and stared wide-eyed at her friend and lover.

"M-Maria! Y-you're shrinking too!"

Overwhelmed by what was happening, Kathryn was paralyzed with fear as she and Maria shrank smaller and smaller until they were so small that the bed appeared as big as a football field to them. The room, which they'd shared for the last two years, was so large now that Kathryn could barely make out the dim outline of the door down the hallway. Frightened, Kathryn screamed, although the sound was more like a squeak to anyone (other than Maria) who might have been listening.

Shaking her head, Maria casually rose to her feet, shrugged her shoulders and smiled as her wings fluttered in response. It felt good to return to normal after so long. Looking down at Kathryn, her smile faded a little as she saw her friend scurry under the sheets.

"Kathryn, don't be that way," Maria pleaded with her. "Come on!"

Making her way casually across the silky sheets, Maria knelt down beside Kathryn, who trembled in fear. Even as she noticed Maria, she still looked like a frightened animal. Reaching out her hand, Maria whispered in a comforting tone. "I told you when we first met that I would always be with you. So you failed the exam. So what? I'm offering you a chance to come with me!"

Kathryn blinked.

"Wait, you're saying you've always been..."

"A faerie?"

Kathryn nodded silently, causing Maria to giggle.

"Of course, silly! We make it a point to have a dozen or so of our kind integrate into the school and make friends with students who may or may not graduate. That way, if they don't, we offer them another choice! A better choice."

Kathryn responded quietly.

"And what about those who do graduate?"

Maria's smile faded a little.

"Well, in those cases, we stay in touch for awhile and gradually let our relationships fade... like most friendships from college do. I've known several good friends who made it."

"What about me?" Kathryn asked as she hung her head. "Am I your first failure?"

Maria's smile blossomed even brighter. "No! You're my first success!"

Now Kathryn was truly confused. "Wait...what?"

"I want you to come with me," Maria said, gesturing towards the open window and the night sky filled with the full moon. "I want you to be happy, without the books and the studying and the worrying about what you're going to make of your life. If you come with me, I promise you'll never have to worry again!"

Several seconds passed as Kathryn didn't move. Maria felt a twinge of doubt as Kathryn turned her gaze towards the window fearfully.

"Kathryn... I promise you, this will be the best decision you've every made."

After what felt like an eternity, Kathryn turned her gaze up toward her best friend and smiled.

The next day, the dorm monitor found the room deserted except for a note that read: "No more worries, no more cares, studies are over, we soar through the air!"
